The UN World Food Programme invited us to see them work firsthand. Their thrust is to aid in the most conflict-affected areas, which in the Philippines is Mindanao where 59% of children are food-deprived!
They tie up with schools to give children a hot, nutritious meal everyday and they reward regular attendance with a ration of 1/4 sack of rice per month. This helps with the hunger epidemic while keeping kids in school.
It was also the introduction of their new brand ambassador, KC Concepcion, to the kids and schools, which of course meant that the visit was a media frenzy!
The kids seemed healthy and happy, which might mean that the year-old program is working. We were told though that there are a lot of places that aren't doing as well so there's really a need to support the WFP and raise funds! So look out for opportunities to do that, coming soon! :)
